The Underhill Vineyards, 1867

In October 1867, Harper's Weekly featured a full-page wood engraving depicting the Underhill vineyards on Croton Point during grape harvest season. The artwork, created by artist D. C. Hitchcock, captured the operation of Richard T. Underhill's vineyard enterprise.

According to historian Thomas Pinney's History of Wine in America, the Underhills represented "the first dynasty in American viticulture" and were "the real founders of the winegrowing industry in New York" due to their operation's scale and longevity.

The engraving's details reveal various aspects of vineyard work, including the Underhill mansion situated at Croton Point's southern tip and workers harvesting grapes.
