The View from Quaker Bridge

This post showcases historical postcards depicting the Croton River near Quaker Bridge, dating from approximately 1901-1907. The first card, published by William Terhune of "Ossining on Hudson," presents "the Croton River, from Quaker Bridge, where Washington's Army Crossed."

Despite its unpaved road surface and different railings in the historic images, "our beloved Quaker Bridge is one of Westchester's oldest surviving bridges, built in 1894." The photographic perspective appears to show the river looking upstream toward the New Croton Dam.

While the postcard labels claim this location marks where Washington's forces crossed during the Revolutionary War, the exact location of the "New Bridge"—constructed in 1779 during that conflict—remains undetermined.
