Stagecoach, Sloop, Steamboat

These newspaper advertisements from the Hudson River Chronicle illustrate how transportation methods evolved along the Hudson River in the Croton area during the early 19th century.

During the early 1800s, stagecoaches and sloops served as the primary means of travel between New York City and Albany, as steamboats were relatively scarce on the river. However, this transportation landscape shifted dramatically by 1840, when "over one hundred steamboats" operated on the Hudson. The transformation accelerated further when the Hudson River Railroad opened approximately a decade later.

Collaberg, a historical name for the Croton region, appears in the ads. The Hudson River Chronicle, published in Sing Sing from 1837 through the 1860s, provides valuable documentation of local history.
