Celebrating Ossining's Double Arch
Celebrating Ossining's Double Arch
This post celebrates the restoration of Ossining's famous Double Arch promenade, which reopened on Saturday, July 20, 2013. The Double Arch is a granite aqueduct structure spanning the Sing Sing Kill. In 1839, the Westchester Herald called it "the most astonishing specimen of the art and ability of man to be seen in this section."
The article assembles historical images documenting this engineering landmark, including an 1868 map, construction drawings by Chief Engineer John B. Jervis (circa 1837), period stereoviews and lithographs, early 20th-century postcards, and photographs of the Arcade File Works, which operated from 1848 until the early 1900s.
