August 13, 1841 - "A ride to the Croton Dam"

The post features a historical diary entry from Julia Lawrence Hasbrouck, dated 172 years prior to publication. Hasbrouck documented a journey from Sing Sing to the Old Croton Dam that occurred on Friday, August 13, 1841.

She described the conditions: "A beautifull day, the sun obscured, and a cool breeze blowing." An unexpected visitor named Garret arrived at noon.

At three o'clock, the group departed for a seven-mile ride to observe the Croton waterworks dam. Hasbrouck noted that "the children behaving remarkably well" during their journey through hilly terrain.

A significant winter freshet had destroyed local bridges, forcing travelers to ford the Croton River to reach the dam construction site. At that time, approximately 400 workers were employed in dam repairs, residing in temporary structures on surrounding hills.
