History Underfoot

A homeowner in Harmon showcased Croton Point bricks integrated into their porch flooring, many bearing the stamp "WAU" (William A. Underhill's initials). These well-preserved bricks, worn by over a century of use, represent the industrial heritage of the region.

William A. Underhill operated a brickyard on Croton Point's northern end, extracting clay deposits for production. His brother, Richard T. Underhill, developed vineyards on the southern portion of the peninsula.

The residence also features additional bricks stamped "IXL"—a marketing phrase meaning "I excel"—highlighting Underhill's confidence in his brickmaking craft. Beyond the brickwork, the home contains stonework executed by masons who participated in constructing the New Croton Dam, further documenting the area's construction history.
