Drive to the New Croton Dam, 1913

crotonhistory.org 150 words

In 1913, the Overman Tire Company conducted a demonstration test using a National touring car equipped with their cushion tires. The test aimed to showcase "the ability of Overman cushion tires to withstand the abuse to which tires ordinarily are subjected by the average driver." The vehicle traveled various routes and road surfaces within a 50-mile radius of New York City.

The test route conveniently passed by the New Croton Dam, with a photographer documenting the journey. The complete collection of 342 photographs from this 1913 Overman tires demonstration is accessible online through the Detroit Public Library's National Automotive History Collection.

Several photographs were captured that day along various country roads, though most locations remain unidentified. One notable exception is an image taken at Croton Lake Station, which served the New York Central Railroad's Putnam Division. This station was historically located along present-day Saw Mill River Road and Route 118.
