So destructive had this ferocious animal become in 1694 that the town of Bedford offered " twenty shillings bounty for the killing of wolves." In the northern part of this town is situated the residence and estate of the Jay family. Here the Hon. John Jay spent the latter part of his life. The house is delightfully seated on a rising ground backed with luxuriant woods. The surrounding scenery is ex-ceedingly picturesque, particularly on the west overlooking the Kisco and Croton vallies, and the hills bordering the Hudson. Among these is the distant Dunderberg. A sunset view from this place is uncommonly grand. The interior of the mansion contains a number of excellent portraits. These consist of the Hon.
