[J. Thomas Scharf (1886)] After remaining in charge for two years he became an assistant in the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City, and subsequently took charge of a parish in Amenia. From this last place he came to Sing Sing. In 1884 he was assisted by the Rev. James P. Byrnes, a native of Ireland, and educated at Seton Hall, New Jersey He came to Sing Sing from the Church of the Immaculate Conception, on Fourteenth Street, New York City. In 1884 St. Augustine's Church had approximately fourteen hundred members and a Sunday-school which was attended by about four hundred scholars. A Young Men's Literary Union was organized in 1880 by Father Tandy, for the literary and social cul-ture of its members, which is in a flourishing condi-tion.
