The parcel 1 It has been stitcd that the lakes received the'name Croui Ponds from a man named from, who resided near them, and that his uame appeal! in some of the old deeds. The proof of this statement is not at hand. It furnishes, however, the best explanation yet advanced. In Peekskill, to-day, reside people, the pronunciation of whose name is the same ai that of the lakes, though the spelling is different. -'From an historical sermon delivered by the |iaslor. Rev. This church was the pioneer church in the region. There Was no meeting-house of any denomination to Hudson River on the west, and the Bedford Church was the nearest neighbor on the east. The parish embraced Cortlandt, Yorktown, Somersand the lower portion of Putnam County.
