B. A Map of Hurricanes Which Have Occurred Between September 16 and 30 During the Last Fifty Years in the Eastern Part of the United States.

1. During the half-century ten hurricanes

have struck inland in the latter half of September.

2. Hurricanes usually originate off the

northern coast of South America, move west from Africa, and travel toward the West Indies and Florida, moving about 300 miles per day.

3. The hurricane of 1938 moved 750 miles

in 12 hours from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to Burlington, Vermont.
