The proportions of o chart should be such that when reproduced or displayed it will fit harmoniously the medium of presentation.

PROPORTIONS FOR LEHER SIZE. The ratio of 1 (short side) to 1.414 (long side) is particularly appropriate for correspondence size sheets (nominally 81/2" X 11").

Note: A rectanflle of this proportion is Icnown as a "root-two" or "hypotenuse" rectangle, the long side of which is equal to the diagonal of a square constructed on the short side. This rectangle possesses the unique characteristic that when divided in half width-wise, each resulting rectangle is also of root-two proportions; a characteristic useful in grouping charts on a page.
