Archivist summary: Nathaniel Baylies (1791-1873), whose surname is actually spelled Bayles, owned land at the site of the capture of British Major John André in Tarrytown. He does not believe in the reliability of David Hammond’s account of the route taken by Major André on the morning of his capture, and states that he will speak with the friends of Isaac Van Wart, one of the three captors of André.

Editorial note: Bedford Road is present-day Route 448 in Sleepy Hollow. “Lee’s store” may refer to the store of William See, which was located at the northwest corner of Broadway, Beekman Avenue and Bedford Road in Sleepy Hollow.
